'Daughters and Sisters'  addressed the charged subject of violence directed at women. It was created as a memorial for 14 female engineering students who, after being separated at gunpoint from their male classmates in a Montreal classroom, were then killed by a man whose application to the school had been rejected. Women from all over the Toronto area volunteered to be cast for the work, as a way to speak out against the act.

The work was exhibited in Toronto in 1990 at the Franklin Silverstone  Gallery, A Space and also at the Woman's Common, (image  #1 -at far left) and finally at the Icehouse Alternative-Arts Museum in Phoenix (I.A.M.) in 1993 (images # 2,3,4 & 5).

PROJECT NOTES  from the  1993  Icehouse Alternative-Arts Museum black water installation in Phoenix (I.A.M.)

The exhibition of the casts in the 100 year old concrete Icehouse allowed the work to take on added dimension.
 
Installed on the 3rd floor in a room located at the end of a dimly lit hall, visitors entered through the tiny doorway and crossing the threshold into a grotto and onto a boardwalk that appeared to be floating at the edge of a deep water precipice. (The floor was flooded with black water to make it visually impenetrable and reflective)

LAST PUBLIC  event 1996  - Survival Research Laboratories

The Daughters and Sisters and the Blind Muse were last seen in 1996 in the Survival Research Laboratories event, A Million Inconsiderate Experiments. Large steel arrows were imbedded into the 14 casts creating warheads -- that were catapulted into the desert night, and the Blind Muse was seen captive on a boat headed to a firey death.
